BEHIND THE SCENES: Exterior Remodel

Rendering of an exterior remodel

Our client’s charming 1940s home had been given minimal updates over the last 80 years, so the exterior needed some major love! We’re talking new roof, new siding, new paint, window updates and repairs, all-new basement windows, a custom front and back pergola and small fixture updates. Our design vision is to keep some of the original charm (love that brick chimney) while modernizing the overall vibe.

Hardie® Plank Cedarmill Siding

We replaced the vinyl siding with the best of the best: James Hardie® Plank Cedarmill Siding. It costs less than wood, doesn’t attract pests and is water resistant to protect against swelling, cracking and buckling. It’s also a total rock star when it comes to color that lasts.

Benjamin Moore Paint

Our go-to for paint is always Benjamin Moore. They have lines for every budget and project scope. Here, we went with a dark and moody shade for a modern look, adding white paint around the windows to lighten things up a bit and a fun pop of color on the front door.

Windows

Our client opted for restoring the original wood windows, which allowed our team to remove the storm protectors that were blocking a lot of light. We gave the wood a little TLC by scraping off the many layers of old paint and repainting it. SO MUCH BETTER! Because the basement windows were installed into the foundation and in much worse shape than the main house, we decided to replace these with new vinyl windows, mainly for flooding and safety purposes.

Pergola

To open things up, we removed the existing metal railing and patio cover from the front and back areas of the home. Our client still wanted an area off the back of the house where they could enjoy the amazing summer months in Oregon, so we custom-built a simple pergola with clear roofing for light exposure. We finished it with a natural stain to warm things up against the dark color of the siding.

Gutters and Rain Chain

There’s nothing sexier than gutters, right?!? All jokes aside, never underestimate the value of good gutters. They will make or break your drainage around the perimeter of the home. We always opt for white gutters and then paint them if that fits the design vision. Painting the gutters the same color as the siding creates a zero-contrast look. Our team and client loved the idea of adding a copper rain chain on the back side of the house for contrast and added ambiance on those rainy summer nights on the patio.

Technology and Fixtures

All the padlocks, doors and security features were updated to state-of-the-art smart security systems. Everything is accessible from our clients’ phone. We added new sensor lighting to the exterior garage for added security and installed all new exterior light fixtures.

This is still a work in progress, but we’ll post final photos when the project’s complete, so be sure to check back!
