Ashley’s Holiday House Tour

What inspires her decorating vibe (J-O-Y) and how to make your space your own (M-O-R-E J-O-Y)

Muted colors and lots of greenery—that’s Ashley’s go-to combo for everything holiday. This year’s look started with a mood board created by Shannon, designer extraordinaire for Ashley Kiely Living. The theme: Modern minimalism. The results: Cozy all the way.

The Minimal Mantel

I keep the mantel and hearth super simple for the holidays. Fresh garlands, a few tapered candles and… done. I really love how the greenery pops on our black fireplace. Even more, I love not having to figure out storage for multiple faux garlands and wreaths. For the stockings, I’m all about neutral colors and a chunky crochet knit. We keep stacked wood in the fireplace year-round to give the hearth an added visual element. Bonus tip: A beautiful basket (especially one with a lid) makes toy clean-up so much easier. Just toss it all in. If toy clutter isn’t an issue, then use the basket to stow a throw pillow or blankets.

Quick Tip: Bring your TV into the decorating scheme by searching “holiday artwork” on YouTube. Mute your TV and just let it play. @VintageArtTV is one of my fave resources for this.

The Tree

I’m all about a real tree. The smell cannot be beat! Instead of a skirt which always gets bunched up, I use a natural fiber collar around the base of the tree because it makes the tree look fuller. It’s also a great backdrop for wrapped presents and gift bags. For ornaments, I like neutral tones and darker greens with gold, white and silver ornaments in a mix of materials: glass, plastic, fabric plush and metal. White lights and a fun gold or sparkly star on the top brings it all together!

The Extra Touches

I add a little festive flair by changing up pillow covers. When the season’s over, I can just switch the covers again and fold up the holiday ones to stow away until next year. It’s so much easier to store the covers than multiple fully-stuffed pillows. They’re easier to wash, too.

The Dining Room

Garland, garland and more garland! It's my go-to for any flat surface, from our credenza to the dining table. I like to keep it simple and don't worry about adding too many bells and whistles. Taper candles, decorative houses or wood trees in varying sizes and heights, and a handful of gold orbs add warmth.

Quick tip: Black or brass candlesticks work so well. I actually leave them out all year-round.
